HIGHLIGHTS
NEW PUBLICATION - THE GROWTH IMPACT OF CHINESE DIRECT INVESTMENT ON HOST DEVELOPING COUNTRIES

A recently published journal paper in the International Business Review by TMCD Director, Prof, Xiaolan Fu, Prof Peter J Buckley and Prof. Maggie Xiaoqing Fu examines the impact of Chinese outward direct investment on host developing countries and investigates whether it is different from that of OFDI from Western countries. The analysis covers the distinctive characteristics of Chinese OFDI, in particular, weak ownership advantages and strong state supportiveness, and how they influence the growth impact of OFDI through different transmission channels.

It finds that both Chinese OFDI and US OFDI have a significant positive impact on capital accumulation in developing countries; however, Chinese OFDI has a stronger effect on employment and productivity growth than US OFDI. Read more here.

THE INCLUSIVE DIGITAL (ID) MODEL TEAM PAID A WORKING VISIT TO DHAKA, BANGLADESH

The Inclusive Digital Model (IDMODEL) project team, comprising of Prof. Xiaolan Fu (PI), Prof. Pervez Ghauri (Co-PI) and Dr. Elvis Avenyo (RO), paid a working visit to Dhaka, Bangladesh, from 27th January – 2nd  February 2020.  The main purpose of the visit was to meet stakeholders, and also to engage directly with the survey team and some households on the IDMODEL project. The IDMODEL project’s ‘Haate Hate’ App which is being developed by SBK Technology Ventures and Foundation in collaboration with the project team is expected to be ready for roll-out in March. THE 4th CHINA-UK INNOVATION AND DEVELOPMENT FORUM

On Monday the 11th of November 2019, the Technology and Management Centre for Development (TMCD) at the University of Oxford convened the 4th iteration of the China – UK Forum on Innovation and Development to deliberate on some of these big questions facing the world today. The 2019 forum, themed ‘Emerging technologies and the future of economy and society’ focused on development of emerging technologies and the future of economy and society, and the key challenges these emerging technologies pose for sustainable and inclusive development. TMCD TO HOST TWO NOBEL LAUREATES

TMCD shall host Prof. Joseph Stiglitz’s  Industry Policy Dialogue (IPD) Task Force on Technology and Development workshop in Oxford in May.  The IPD Task Force on employment concerns the implications for developing countries of emerging technological trends. The Task Force will be co-chaired by Joseph .E. Stiglitz, Akbar Noman and Arjun Jayadev (more details to come).

MEDIA INTERVIEW: THE IMPACT OF COVID-19 ON GLOBAL VALUE CHAINS (GVCs)

TMCD Director, Prof Xiaolan Fu was recently interviewed by Xinhua Net to analyse the impact of the Corona virus epidemic on the Chinese economy. Prof Fu said that while the epidemic has affected global value chains, it shall also provide China some opportunities within global value chains. Read more here.

AWARDS AND RECOGNITION
1. Professor Xiaolan Fu was recently recognized with the Asia-Pacific Research Exchange Award. The award was given for for a paper on governance & innovation, examining the effect of state ownership. The paper found that there is a  difference between central and local government-owned firms, hence their motivation and capacity for innovation differ.

2. Professor Xiaolan Fu, was reappointed to the council of the United Nations Technology Bank for Least Developed Countries. The UN Secretary General, Antonio Guterres commended her for her guidance, oversight and successful operationalisation and work at the UN Technology Bank in the past three years.
UPCOMING EVENTS
1. The IDMODEL panel on 'Digital technology-based business models in support of value creation in developing countries' at the eCommerce week organised by the United Nations Commission on Trade and Development (UNCTAD), Geneva. It holds on Tuesday, 28th April from 10a.m - 11.30a.m. You can read more here.

The following people shall be joining the center:

Jörg Mayer-  Senior Economist at the United Nations Conference for Trade and Development (UNCTAD). Jörg shall be with us from March to June, 2020.

Guglielmo Maccario - PhD Candidate at the International University of Rome UNINT. 

TMCD bids goodbye to Huiling Liu, a PhD student from Huazhong University of Science and Technology who has recently completed her fellowship with the centre.
