HIGHLIGHTS
SECOND CHINA-UK INNOVATION AND DEVELOPMENT FORUM
TMCD University of Oxford, in collaboration with Innovate UK, China-Britain Business Council (CBBC), Institute of Sciences and Development of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CASISD) and the Chinese Academy of Science and Technology for Development (CASTED) of the Ministry of Science and Technology (MOST) of China organised the 2nd China-UK Innovation and Development Forum. The theme of the forum was “Driving Growth and Addressing Challenges Together”. Find out more here.
 
BUILDING DIGITAL COMPETENCIES  REPORT FOR UNCTAD

Professor Xiaolan Fu served as advisor for a new report from the United Nations Commission on Science and Technology for Development (UNCTAD) on building digital competencies. She also presented the research report on building digital competencies at the Intersessional Panel 2017-2018. The event took place in Geneva, Switzerland from 6th to 8th November 2018. REPORT ON MULTINATIONAL INNOVATION STRATEGIES IN THE 4TH INDUSTRIAL REVOLUTION

From “Made in China” to “Innovate in China”: A case study on Siemens’ innovation in industrial robotics.

With the global economy at the precipice of the fourth industrial revolution, research into understanding multinationals’ (MNE) international R&D strategies is particularly timely. Using Siemens as a case study, with its recent decision to set up an industrial robotics centre in China, this project, in partnership with Tsinghua University and Carnegie Mellon University, has sought to understand what factors played a decisive role in informing the company’s strategic direction. NEW RESEARCH PROJECTS
Huawei has injected new funding to support the expansion of the Valuation of Early Stage Technology (VEST) project. The VEST project aims to develop valuation tools for the assessment of new technologies.

The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) has agreed in principle to collaborate with the Centre on 'Trade in Environmentally Sound Technology' research project. Details about this project will be disclosed in the coming months.
 

TMCD-SBS JOINT WORKSHOP
TMCD and the Saïd Business School organised a joint informal workshop to discuss on-going research between the two institutions. The workshop occurred on 17th January 2018 from 9am-12pm. From state-level diffusion of Uber in the United States of America to the co-evolution of MNEs in host country environments like China, presenters and discussants analysed the role of the state in innovation and development.  Find out more here.

 

WELCOMES AND GOODBYES
TMCD bids goodbye to our Visiting fellow: Professor Xiaoqiang Xing. He spent his six months stint working on Lean product innovation in current internet era: A case of Chinese new start-up and the Evolution of the BoP Network: A longitudinal case study. According to him, his time at TMCD was insightful and it will go a long way to benefit his future career development. We also bid farewell to our research assistant Pu Yan. 

We are delighted to welcome our new Project Coordinator Geraldine Adiku and our new visiting fellow Professor Qun Bao. He is a professor of Economics at Nankai University's Department of International Economics. During his time at TMCD, his research will focus on the determinants and impacts of Outward Foreign Direct Investment (OFDI) in China.
CONGRATULATIONS TO SAMUEL GALLER

We say a huge congratulations to our research student, Samuel Galler who successfully defended his DPhil (PhD) thesis. His research focused on global governance, technological innovations in health, and the development of effective civil organizations.
CONFERENCES
At the recent 2017 European International Business Academy (EIBA) conference held in Milan from 14-16 December, TMCD staff presented the following papers: When do Chinese firms undertake international open innovation?,  How Can Chinese Firms Become Radical Innovators: The Role of International Collaboration? And Sequential patterns of acquisition and cooperation: how do they matter for innovation in China? Find out more about the conference here

Professor Xiaolan Fu will give a keynote lecture at the International Association for Chinese Management Research (IACMR) Annual conference in June 2018. Find out more here
 
FORTHCOMING EVENTS
The 3rd China- UK Innovation and Development Forum will take place in China later this year. Details will be given shortly.
 
TMCD staff will also take part in the 30th anniversary conference of China Economic Association (CEA) (UK/Europe). This conference will take place at the University of Edinburgh Business School from 22-23 June 2018. Find out more here.  There will also be the 15th anniversary conference of the Journal of Chinese Economic and Business Studies (JCEBS), under the theme China's path to the new era: Innovation and paradigm shift at this conference.
