Speakers discuss digital development at the IDMODEL Bangladesh Conference

The Inclusive Digital Model (IDMODEL) Forum for Bangladesh was held online on Sunday, 19th December, 2021. Professor Xiaolan Fu, the director of the Oxford Technology and Management Centre for Development (TMCD), delivered the keynote address providing updates on the progress of the IDMODEL project, its research findings and policy implications.

The forum comprised three sessions. Dr. Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury, the Speaker of the Bangladesh Parliament, was the Chief Guest of the 1st Ssession. He said that there was no alternative to digital technology for inclusive development and that the newly launched 'Haate Haat' app would play a vital role to put the 'Digital Bangladesh' progress forward. The state minister for ICT Division of Bangladesh, Zunaid Ahmed Palak MP; Minister for Ministry of Education of Bangladesh, Dr. Dipu Moni MP and the Under-Secretary-General of the United Nations (UN), Courtenay Rattray, spoke as special guests. The Founder of SBK Foundation, Sonia Bashir Kabir, chaired the session.

Professor Pervez Ghauri of the University of Birmingham Business School chaired the 2nd Session. The Managing Director of Bank Asia, Md. Arfan Ali; the former Executive Director of the Bangladesh Bank, Lila Rashid; the Managing Director of Aamra Networks, Syed Farhad Ahmed and the CEO of bKash, Kamal Quadir, attended as distinguished speakers of the session.

Professor Xiaolan Fu chaired the 3rd session. Guest speakers in this session included the Executive Director of Center for Policy Dialogue (CPD), Dr. Fahmida Khatun; the CEO of Grameenphone, Yasir Azman; the Chairman of Under Privileged Children’s Education Program (UCEP), Dr. Parveen Mahmud; the President of Dhaka Chamber of Commerce & Industries (DCCI), Rizwan Rahman and the Managing Director of Trust Bank, Humaira Azam.

While digital business models have the potential to enhance the capabilities of small-business owners and drive economic growth, there are several gaps in our understanding of how this process works. The IDMODEL project has brought together researchers from the fields of technology, development studies and responsible business studies to fill these gaps.
