TMCD Director, Prof Xioalan Fu, recently shared her opinions on accelerating global COVID-19 vaccine production at the nineteenth session of the UNIDO General Conference on the 1st of December, 2021.

In a recent article co-authored by Professor Xiaolan Fu, she argued that despite calls to waive intellectual property rights for COVID-19 vaccines, waivers would be insufficient to address supply constraints as it cannot force pharmaceutical companies to share knowhow and technology. Therefore, the best way to facilitate this transfer of technology and knowledge and ramp up global vaccine production is through the creation of joint ventures between global vaccine manufacturers and local pharmaceutical companies in the Global South, organised into regional hubs.
