Professor Xiaolan Fu addresses UN Plenary Expert Group on SDG8: Decent Work and Economic Growth
On the 10th of July, Centre Director Professor Xiaolan Fu participated in a UN High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development. The Expert Group Meeting reviewed progress to SDG8: Decent Work and Economic Growth.
In the face of significant political and technological disruptions on the global trade system and their impact on job creation and income inequality, policymakers face profound challenges fulfilling the SDGs' main principle to 'Leave no one behind'.
Four policy recommendations which Prof. Fu highlighted in her session were:
- Building digital skills and competencies as well as broader reform in education and training systems for life-long learning;
- Increasing global partnerships and policy coordination for investments in educational training and infrastructure;
- Responsible use of emerging technologies to create decent jobs through fit-for-purpose governments regulations and policies;
- Reinvigorating a rules-based multilateral system to coordinate actions between countries as well as integrating domestic and foreign agendas for international trade, investment cooperation and social policy.
